During This Cold Weather...

...do you conserve energy by wearing a sweater inside your home or just throw another log on the fire?

:wavey: <---wearing two pair of socks

Thermostat border disputes are pretty much the only constant source of adrenaline in my house

I like clothes, she likes burning fossil fuels.

Electric blankets with dual thermostats have saved many a marriage.

During cold snaps, my family and I wear extra sweaters and stuff. And I don't shower but 2 times a week. Going to go lower the thermostat right now.

We set the thermostat to 54 at night, about 62 during the day, and burn wood on the weekends. House built in the 70's has new windows, but not designed very efficient (vaulted ceiling, poor insulation, etc.). Helps to sleep with a hooded sweater or stocking cap.

 I [finally] figured that out last year while sleeping next to an outside wall. The conductive thermal loss was significant from that cold wall. An excellent tip drafter.

Time/day thermostats. If you're away for work or at night, the house can be set so the pipes don't freeze. Down comforter is a lot cheaper than a season's heat. But then you need the nightcap. Er, the non-drinking one...

Best reason to burn wood is that you can throw another log on, make the house for your burmudas, and never feel bad. A single cut or two will do it. That and getting the house dry, with your clothes, feeling hot and satisified once in a while.

:cool2: Cold or Hot doesn't make much difference.

Thermostat stays on 70 degrees year round...we never touch it.

Think over sized heat pump and macho insulation along with thermal windows and a south facing glass sun room.

I can open a back door....close a front door and the pressure slams the back door closed.
We're talking tight here...in below freezing temperatures it would take a week with no heat to lower the inside temperature to 60...yes,we have already tried it. The south facing sunroom supplies 50% or more of all daytime heat...the heat pump only runs at night occasionally.
Yeah...if you haven't guessed, the entire back wall of the sunroom is a concrete tram wall that is ducted through the duct distribution registers to every room...passive heat or active if I just run the heat pump fan.
I wear shorts and T shirts year round if I'm in the house. We just close off the sunroom in the summer months during the daytime to shed the heat gain.In the winter I have a photocell wired to electric assisted insulated drapes to open automatically at daylight and close the drapes at sundown...sort of like a mini greenhouse.
Insulation is cheaper than electricity...anyday.

:cool2: :cool2: :cool2:

My utility bill ?...around $75.00 a month year round...that's with total electric KWH rates for a 3000 sq ft home.
Can't touch that with natural gas...although I do have LPG hot water and heat for backup in case TSHTF and the grid goes down.

Why are women always so cold, anyway?

Nothing beats the heating comfort of a good wood stove, IMO.

Lots of creative things folks can do to beat the cold. Don't give it all to the utility companies, that's for sure. Unless you've got energy stocks, maybe.

They are biologically set up to keep their cores warm so they can incubate a fetus...works even when not pregnet. They need to keep their torso warm then the rest of them will stay warm.....

Hmm. Does make some sense. Thanks.

It'd be nice if I could get some answers for some of their other behaviors, too LOL
